With the increasing concern of every educated citizen in the country with the growing numbers and high population growth rates, it has become imperative to impart knowledge about population phenomenon to our younger generation. Some elements of this phenomenon have been introduced during the past few years in school education at various levels. The need to introduce a separate paper at the undergraduate level was, however, recognized by the Association of Indian Universities which formulated a syllabus for this purpose around 1975. The University Grants Commission has also recognized the need in this regard and suggested to various Universities to introduce a full paper in anthropol ogy, economics, geography, and sociology at the undergraduate level.
