The song of Hiawatha was suggested by a perusal of the Finnish epic, the 'Kalevala,' published, at Helsingfors, in 1835. It was undertaken at the suggestion of the Rev. John Pierce, of Brookline, whose early kindness I have remembered with grateful feelings. It is a pleasant thought to remember that this suggestion was made by one whose early counsels had guided my thoughts, and whose enthusiasm had been to me a constant encouragement. To him I owe the first suggestion of a series of tales and legends, which I have since worked up into this poem.
