The preface to "The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes" is brief but important, as it represents Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ’s reflections on his most famous creation , Sherlock Holmes . While it's hard to pick a "best" version since the preface doesn 't vary , it does carry an interesting tone of both pride and fatigue . Conan Doyle acknowledges Holmes ’ immense popularity and hints at how , despite his own desire to move on to other subjects , he still feels a responsibility toward his audience and the enduring fascination they have with the detective.
