Since the appearance of the third edition of the book, tremendous advancements have been made in all the expanding areas of microbiology. I have made an attempt to incorporate all such information in the present edition, and arrange diverse areas of microbiology in a coherent manner. The overall arrangement of this edition is somewhat different from that of previous editions. The first eleven chapters deal with the basic concepts of microbiology and the remainder ones with the applications of microorganisms to environment, industry, agriculture and public health.
