In the past couple of decades, plant cell and tissue culture has emerged as a major tool in investigations relating to fundamental and applied aspects of biology. Advancements in the plant tissue culture technology have opened up new vistas in the fields of cell and development biology, plant physiology, biochemistry and genetics. The applications of this technology is being successfully exploited in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and industry by way of improvement of crop production, propagation, cultivation and conservation of ornamentals, medicinal and aromatic plants and forest trees, and industrial production of plant metabolites.
