Dr. Jack Griffin (Claude Rains), who is the protagonist of the story, accidentally discovers a substance that can turn him invisible. That is the person who discovers the one drug that can make it disappear. It becomes evident that the potion's side effect is insanity when he tells his old mentor (Henry Travers) and his fiancée (Gloria Stuart) about his new ability. When Jack starts acting violently, the police struggle to apprehend him because they can't see their intended victim. Meanwhile, his mentor and his former partner (William Harrigan) scramble to come up with a plan to apprehend Jack.
