Each year millions of persons pass by train, bus or private automobiles through our arid zone. To the greater number, these arid lands are but places desolate, and in-hospitable, great expanses of monotony against water less or saline water or excess of water in frozen horizons. They think of arid zones as singularly devoid of animal life, except, of course “lizards, snakes, scorpions and spiders,” and with only “sage and greasewood bushes and cacti” here and these to break the monotony of gray sand, snow white ice and saline water. Actually thousands of wonders lie about them, often within stone's throw, never-to-be-forgotten. Sources of surprise, admiration, and pleasure that can be their to enjoy if only they expand a little effort to recognize and interpret what they see.
