I have already confessed in the preface of the preceding edition of the book that while writing the manuscript of the first edition of the present book more than 40 years ago, I was a bit skeptical about my competence as an author of a textbook of ecology. The reason was quite simple. I had no specialized training in this science. My field of specialization for master's programme was mycology and plant pathology. But I was fortunate enough to have been taught ecology as one of the core courses at M.Sc. level by my worthy mentor, Professor R. Misra. Thereafter I undertook research for my Ph.D. degree under the guidance of Professor R. S. Dwivedi who suggested that I should work on ecology of fungi colonising decaying shoots of an annual grass. It provided me an opportunity to read widely around the field of microbial ecology and ecology in general. I earned my Ph.D. degree of Banaras Hindu University in 1967 for the thesis entitled “Succession of fungi on decaying Setaria glauca Beauv.”
